They help cleanse our aura, enhance our chakra, connect us to Earth and more. That’s why it’s of utmost importance to know how to cleanse them, so we nurture, cherish and maintain their magical properties. In this article, we’re going to introduce you to various methods of cleansing your crystals, read on.
In the Post
Once they are mined out of a mine, crystals travel a long path until they get to your hands. They interact with various people, chakra, energies, aura and more.
As such, they also radiate or absorb certain energies, and more often than not, negative energies. They interchange from miners to sellers, from consumer to consumer until they come to you.
How to Cleanse Crystals – Right to the Point
When crystals are used for healing, they either absorb or channel the negative energies further away from you. However, if a stone absorbs too much negative energy, it can do more harm than good. That’s why it’s extremely important to cleanse so that the negativity you want to release should be as further away from you as possible.
In the paragraphs below, we’ll introduce the most common methods to cleanse crystals, as well as some you may have not heard about before. We’ll also try to detail on how to use crystals with every intention. Read on.
1. Cleansing with water stream
A saying as old as time has it that water can “cleanse anything but sin.” Hence, it’s a great purification method for gemstones. It’s most commonly used for hard stones that need neutralization of accumulated negative energy. The negative energy, once cleansed, returns back to the Earth, and purifies. It’s best to use warm water stream, as it helps you cleanse and rinse the stone.
There are no special steps, although it works the best with gemstone being completely submerged. After you finish cleansing, dry it carefully with a dry towel. It’s best recommended to run the cleansing process between 30 seconds and 1 minute.
Unfortunately, this methodology works best only with hard stones such as quartz, as well as gemstones with hardness higher than 6 Mohs on the hardness scale. Don’t use it on extremely soft stones such as howlite, kyanite, selenite, and halite.
2. Cleanse Crystals with Salty water
Salt has often been associated with purification throughout the centuries. In combination with water, it’s a great cleaning mix. In addition to that, salty water can help you cleanse the negativity out of your gemstones.
Do you remember when, as a child, they told you to go to vacation near the sea or the ocean? The salted water isn’t only good for our gemstones but also our wellbeing. The salted water cleans our throat, gums, mind, soul and more.
Although making sea-salted water is relatively easy at home, it’s best to collect a bowl of saltwater if you live close to the ocean. If you don’t live near the sea, you can make the mix by combining table salt, rock salt or sea salt with a bowl of freshwater.
Similarly to how you performed with freshwater, you have to submerge the stone in entirety. You can leave it inside for a longer time than a few minutes, starting from a few hours to up to two or three days.
It’s worth mentioning that this method shouldn’t be used with fragile and porous stones such as selenite, malachite, halite, angelite, or other stones that contain metal traces.
It’s no secret that sage comes with various healing and protection properties. It can soothe our throat, gum infections, and various respiratory conditions. It’s also a great cleanser for gemstones. Many cultures often call it a sacred plant, so there’s no doubt it’s effective with birthstones too.
Here’s how to make your sage elixir. Make sure to get a fire-safe bowl, matches and bundled sage. Additionally, as it’ll get hot, open a nearby window for a constant flow of fresh air. Otherwise, you can also make the elixir outside.
After everything has been prepared, light up the stage with fire, and toss the sage to the hand you useless. Then, grab the gemstone you want to cleanse and run it through the flame left behind the burning sage. The smoke should consume the stone and take away its negativity so it’s best to use it from between 30 seconds and 1 minute.
This method is great because you can use it to cleanse any stone, whether it’s hard or soft and porous. However, don’t keep the practice going for longer than a minute.
4. Rice is a great help here
Rice is a popular cleanser. If you’ve ever had to deal with your phone falling into the water, rice has been extremely helpful. The same case goes for gemstones, although people often resort to using brown rice due to its absorbing capabilities.
If you are using protective stones such as fire agate or black tourmaline, using rice may be particularly useful.
To cleanse negativity and energy from the gemstones, place rice in a bowl and then put the stone in the bowl, make sure to completely submerge it and cover it in rice. You can leave it for extended amounts of time, although leaving it for a day should be more than enough.
The best part is, you can use it with every stone, despite its hardness or toughness.
5. Sunlight or moonlight
There are multiple sayings that propose that sun exposure makes us happier, alleviates stress, and helps with conditions like anxiety and depression. The same goes for crystals and stones, although moonlight yields great results too.
In this particular case, you can yield great results even at regular sunlight or moonlight. It’s best to set the stone before the nightfall so it both lights cleanse and touch the stones.
If you’re putting it during the day, make sure not to put it when the sunlight is the strongest as the natural glow and color may be washed away. Longer exposure to the direct sun can damage the stone’s surface. Either place it in the afternoon, early morning or evening and then get it after the sun rises.
If you live away from the city and can put the gemstone in the earth, its energy will be purified the multiple ways. Just make sure that other animals don’t disturb it. After the cleansing is complete, pat the gemstone dry and clean the dirt so it doesn’t get into its pores.
You can clean the crystals for up to 12 hours, but not less than 6 hours. Additionally, make sure to use it on tumbled gemstones, those without prominent color. Vibrant gemstones like amethyst and ruby may become damaged, and their natural glow may be washed away.
6. Sound and vibration
Music brings relaxation, harmony, and calmness. But, what is music if not properly channeled sound?
Sound healing is great, not only for our mind but also the gemstones. They are not as demanding as us, a simple pitch tone may be enough to wash away the negative energy. Gemstones feel vibrations, often associated with spirituality and astral traveling.
You can easily generate cleansing sound by using simple chanting or singing, bowls, bells, forks or anything vibration-inducing. It may not appear musically appealing to you or enchanting at all, but your stones and crystals will appreciate it.
If you own a lot of gemstones and crystals, using vibration to cleanse them could be the fastest method as you don’t have to cleanse every crystal separately. Expose the stones to the pitch sound from between 5 to 10 minutes and don’t worry. This method is applicable to any stone.

7. Other stones
Larger stones like selenite, amethyst and quartz are ideal for cleansing of smaller crystals, especially because they are more resistant to evil forces. They are a great tool for cleansing smaller stones as long as they’re clean themselves.
You can achieve this by laying the stone you want to clean under or on top of the larger stone. The vibration of the larger stone will radiate negativity away from the smaller stone, just as it’d wash away negativity from you.
This method is an ideal choice for using on any type of a smaller stone regardless of color or hardness. Just be careful so that they don’t end up scratching and damaging each other.
For each and every of your stone or crystal, this method can be used for up to 24 hours.
